As we grow older, hip constriction becomes very common. Whether you are a couch potato who is sitting most of the time or an active person who plays various sports, hip restriction or limitation happens. It is very beneficial for you to loosen your hips as it promotes circulation and enhances agility and mobility. Here are some yoga stretches and poses that will help you in opening up your hips. Start by lying on your back with both feet on the floor and your knees up. Keep your head on the floor and your shoulders relaxed. Position the outside of your right ankle on to your left thigh just below your left knee. Flex your right foot to engage all the muscles in your leg and to keep your right knee protected. Begin by bringing your left knee to your chest and bringing your right leg along with it. Pull only as far as you feel comfortable and feel the stretch in your right hip. Hold for 15 seconds, release, and then repeat on your other side. A yoga pose also known as Cobbler’s Pose is also beneficial for opening your hips. Start by sitting on the floor with the soles of your feet together, letting the knees fall out to either side. Keep your spine long and press the outer edges of your feet together strongly. You may also place a block under each knee for support if needed. For the advanced pose, keep the spine long and then come into a forward bend. You can also try another position which is called the Goddess Pose. From the Cobbler’s Pose, lean backward, bringing your elbows to the floor. Lower your back all the way to the floor. Stay in this position for several minutes. If you are not comfortable lying down on the floor, you may use a bolster to support your spine. You may also position a block under each knee for support if necessary. Another yoga pose is the Seated Wide Legged Straddle which also stretches the hamstrings and calves. Begin by sitting with legs opened out as wide as you are comfortable and make sure your toes are pointing straight up to the ceiling. Keep your thigh muscles engaged and your feet flexed, then press your legs down the floor. You can talk about...
